What is the definition of addiction?

Suspect [Mock question creatively disguised as a real question]

Howdy, Happe. When I was a sweet young thang (okay, I wasn't that sweet) it had a very specific meaning. If I recall correctly, it was a physical dependency on a substance that also required increasing the dosage to obtain the same effect. The word is used by so many people to describe so many different things, that I wonder how you define it.

Hi CC....I like the traditional AA Big book definition of addiction. "An allergy of the body coupled with an obsession of the mind". When you look at addictive behaviors that don't involve consumption of a substance...we release our own chemicals when we addictively gamble, spend, sex etc. I think we have a troubled relationship biologically to those chemicals and we obsess about re creating that feeling that the chemicals produce.

I also think there needs to be suffering created as the result of the behavior to be considered and addiction. The suffering can be internal(biological) or external(family, work etc.). I love you
